Thessaloniki is known as the Bride of Thermaikos. Take a stroll along the White Tower or enjoy your coffee at one of the seaside cafés, and shop at the elegant boutiques on Tsimiski Street. In the evening, we recommend visiting the Ladadika district and enjoying entertainment until morning.
What to See in Thessaloniki
The city’s landmark is the White Tower, located on the Thermaikos seaside promenade. It was built by the Venetians in 1430 and later converted into a prison by the Turks; today, it serves as a beautiful museum of art and history. Like Paris, Thessaloniki also has a triumphal arch, built by Valerius Galerius Maximinus in 298 AD. The Rotunda is a circular building, part of the aforementioned complex, which was originally a temple, later converted into a Christian church, and subsequently into a mosque.
Other notable monuments include the Church of St. Demetrius, the city’s patron saint, along with other churches, museums, cultural centers, and art galleries that should not be missed. During the Roman Empire, the social life center was the Agora, where a stoa now serves as an exhibition space following excavations, along with the square, baths, and the Odeon. The archaeological sites are complemented by the sanctuary and early Christian tombs along 3rd September Street. Additional attractions include the Byzantine baths near Koule Café Square, the mosque, the hammam, and the Bezesteni (former fabric market).
A little further out, in Epanomi, a settlement dating back to prehistoric times has been discovered, including Neolithic and later settlements. You can also find the Church of St. George and the Kritsian Monastery there. In the settlement of Lagkadas, famous for the Anastenaria, admire the Nymphopetra rocks, which resemble people in a wedding procession, the baths, and the eponymous lake.
Food in Thessaloniki
One of Thessaloniki’s highlights is that every neighborhood has traditional taverns offering authentic local cuisine at very reasonable prices. Some of Thessaloniki’s specialties include the famous bougatsa, loukoumades, and of course, patsas.
Entertainment in Thessaloniki
Thessaloniki offers everything you could wish for. Cafés, bars, clubs, restaurants, taverns, pastry shops, casinos, sports facilities, and anything else you can imagine for entertainment. The busiest areas are the historic Ladadika district near the port, which has become a complex of entertainment centers, as well as Krini, Nikis Avenue, and Navarinou and Aristotelous squares. Most bouzoukis and large dance halls are located near the airport.
