Wherever you look, Athens is full of monuments from both ancient and more recent culture. Walking through Athens and sightseeing is like walking through history itself. If, in fact, you have read a little about its history, it gives you chills. You are treading the footsteps of thousands of ancestors, walking in their steps. If you also consider that it may be the only capital where you can experience everything—take this journey through time and, after just a few kilometers, take a dip in the sea—then you love it even more!
Food in Athens
The Greeks follow the typical Mediterranean diet, with some particularities that make Greek cuisine unique and especially delicious. You will embark on a unique gastronomic journey that will truly delight you! Greek cuisine is a wonderful combination of fresh ingredients, vegetables, aromatic herbs such as thyme, mint, and rosemary, flavorful olive oil, fresh seafood, and local meats. Of course, don’t forget to try the exquisite Greek cheeses, especially feta.
The most popular dishes you can find anywhere are, of course, the famous souvlaki and Greek gyro, the most characteristic and national fast food in Greece. Greek culinary delight is something that cannot be replaced or found in any other cuisine. That’s why you should allow yourself to enjoy a complete gastronomic experience in the wonderful Greek restaurants, which will leave you truly unforgettable memories! Most restaurants are worthy representatives of Greek hospitality and can serve you perfectly. Just like bars, restaurants, and taverns, they are found everywhere in Athens. The Plaka area is perhaps the most picturesque but also the area that receives the most tourists. The Psyrri area is not far from Monastiraki, with many beautiful shops, eateries, meze taverns, and live music taverns day and night. While the quality of food is generally assured, be careful with your choice to avoid surprises when the bill arrives! Many restaurants have signs showing both the menu and prices. So, take a walk first before deciding where to sit.
What to see in Athens
The largest ancient monument in Athens is, of course, the Acropolis. On top of the sacred rock, you can almost feel the grandeur of ancient Greece. Other interesting archaeological sites include the Ancient Agora, with the Temple of Hephaestus still in very good condition, as well as the Temple of Zeus and Hadrian’s Arch.
In Athens, you will find the main museums of Greece, such as the New Acropolis Museum, the National Archaeological Museum, the Folklore Museum, the Ceramic Museum, the Byzantine and Christian Museum, the Music Museum, the War Museum, the Benaki Museum, etc. Overall, there are about 50 museums in Athens. A popular place for shopping, dining, or drinking is Plaka, right below the Acropolis. It is considered a quite touristy area, but here you can get a sense of old Athens, with low buildings and small streets.
In Monastiraki, there is the famous “Yusurum,” the bazaar with antique shops and other items. At Syntagma Square, you can visit the Monument of the Unknown Soldier. Here you can see the Evzones of the Presidential Guard, and if you are lucky, you can watch the slow and intricate changing of the guard in front of the Monument of the Unknown Soldier. The Megaron Concert Hall hosts many wonderful performances, and in the summer, there are numerous shows and concerts at the Herodeon Theatre (Herod Atticus) below the Acropolis, at Lycabettus, and elsewhere.
